Sharon E. Barrett, M.S., retired from the federal Public Health Service, serves as staff consultant to the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved (ACU) on health disparity issues affecting vulnerable and underserved populations, including health literacy, cultural competency, and language access. Throughout her federal career, she administered programs to reduce health disparities and improve access to high-quality, culturally and linguistically competent health care. Ms. Barrett is the principal investigator for the ACU health literacy study and the recently completed the Language Access (LA) study funded by the National Health Law Program (NHeLP). She received a master's of science degree in community organization and program development from Columbia University's School of Social Work, and is completing her Dr.P.H. at Morgan State University's School of Public Health. Ms. Barrett is currently a member of the Institute of Medicine's Health Literacy Roundtable and was appointed to the Minority Women's Health Panel of Experts for the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Women's Health.
