Health care system transformation is essential to address the drivers of health care greenhouse gas and other environmental emissions, including the pollution embodied in products and services as well as overconsumption of resources. Many efforts to mitigate health care pollution are hampered by regulatory and oversight constraints, or their interpretation to avert perceived risk. This project aims to identify key regulatory and policy barriers to implementing changes that would result in more sustainable and resilient health care delivery and identify opportunities for mitigating those barriers. Project activities will be aligned with the goals of the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing U.S. Health Care ("Climate Collaborative"), and lead to a series of peer-reviewed articles covering policy and regulatory opportunities to accelerate the decarbonization of the health sector.
