Biography at time of Harkness Fellowship: Sarah Clifford, M.Sc., Ph.D., a 2008-09 Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice, is a chartered psychologist and lecturer at the University of London, School of Pharmacy. Her research interests include the management of chronic conditions in adult and pediatric patient populations, and she is particularly interested in the issue of non-adherence to treatment. She has recently been principal or co-investigator for research grants to explore the experience of medication-taking for adolescents and young people with ADHD and to evaluate a Barnardo's Children's Charity ADHD parenting programme. She has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Quality and Safety in Health Care, Journal of Psychosomatic Research, and Pharmacy World and Science. Clifford was a recipient of a 2003 "Primary Care Report" Best Practice Award, and a runner up for the Pharmaceutical Care Award for "Hello, it's the pharmacist calling," a study on how telephoning patients improves adherence. She holds a Ph.D. in pharmacy/medicine from the University of London and a M.Sc. in health psychology from King's College London.

Project: Clifford’s project explored the perspectives of adolescents with diabetes, their families, and school nurses about diabetes services and support at school.  Particular areas of interest included whether students were given the resources and privacy they need, whether the care they receive in school was coordinated with outside providers, and any safety concerns.  She conducted unstructured interviews with adolescents with diabetes, parents/caregivers, and school nurses in Rochester, NY.
