High Fees Main Cause of Higher Spending on Physician Services

Another Commonwealth Fund–supported study in September's Health Affairs compares primary care and hip replacement fees in the United States with those in five other nations and finds that U.S. physicians are paid more per service than doctors in other countries—as much as double in some cases. These higher prices, and not practice expenses or medical education costs, seem to be driving higher spending on physicians, the authors say.
