Issues and Future Directions for Medicare


On May 15, 2015, nearly 160 congressional and administration staff, journalists, and other Washington, D.C., policy stakeholders convened for a briefing to explore trends in delivery and payment innovations within Medicare and identify key issues that Congress is likely to face regarding the future of Medicare over the next several years.

Karen Davis, Ph.D., of the Roger C. Lipitz Center for Integrated Health Care at Johns Hopkins University discussed Medicare’s accomplishments and the issues the program faces over the next 50 years regarding access, costs, and quality. Richard Gilfillan, M.D., of Trinity Health described his experience developing innovative delivery and payment models and working with payers, including Medicare, to implement reforms. Samuel Nussbaum, M.D., of Anthem, Inc., addressed the intersection of Medicare and private sector innovations. The briefing was comoderated by Ed Howard, of the Alliance for Health Reform, and The Commonwealth Fund’s Stuart Guterman.
