This project looks at supplemental benefit availability and utilization under Medicare Advantage (MA) plans through three aims: 1) examining major categories of supplemental benefits offered by MA plans in 2018 and 2019; 2) examining enrollment in MA plans with supplemental benefits in 2018 (and 2019 if possible), e.g., which benefit packages are selected; and 3) assessing utilization and cost of supplemental benefits offered by MA plans in 2013, using a unique dataset of MA bid data for 2015. The analysis will indicate beneficiary uptake and plans’ cost in the four supplemental benefit categories identified for the project.
