Carroll L. Estes

Carroll L. Estes is professor of sociology at the University of California, San Francisco, and founder and former director of the Institute for Health and Aging (1979–1998). Dr Estes is a member of the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, and past president of the Gerontological Society of America. She has served as consultant to the U.S. commissioner of Social Security and to U.S. Senate and House Committees and is past president of the American Society on Aging. Her areas of expertise include: Social Security and Medicare (especially issues of privatization), long-term care, and the long-term care (nursing home) ombudsman program. She is also knowledgeable about older women's economic and health security issues.
