Many patients with asthma and other chronic conditions face high health care costs, which may make them unable or unwilling to follow recommended treatment, according to a Commonwealth Fund–supported study in the American Journal of Managed Care (Nov. 2014). The authors, led by Emily Carrier, M.D., a researcher with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Innovation Center, argue that low out-of-pocket cost-sharing would likely encourage asthma sufferers to take medications needed to self-manage their condition.
