More than €5 billion worth of health care subsidies were paid to low-income households in the Netherlands in 2013. These subsidies covered up to 41 percent of the insurance premium paid to an insurance company for each person in a family. The allowance was increased in 2013 to counter increases in premiums, which rose from €220 per person in 2012 to €350 in 2013.
