A new law will permit the means-testing of Australia’s private health insurance rebate. Under the Fairer Private Health Insurance Incentives bills, which passed through the House of Representatives and the Senate this spring, the taxpayer-funded subsidy for insurance decreases as an individual’s or family’s income increases and is eliminated over a certain income threshold. “This is a win for low and middle income earners, who have been forced to subsidize the private health insurance of higher income earners through their taxes,” said Health Minister Tanya Plibersek.
