Promoting Accountable Care in Medicaid

As the federal government and the states work to foster improved performance and greater accountability across the health care system, it will be important for the Medicare and Medicaid programs to develop a common framework for providers and payers participating in accountable care organizations. A new Commonwealth Fund report explores how state Medicaid agencies might build on the Medicare Shared Savings Program, which rewards groups of providers that meet cost and quality benchmarks by working together to coordinate their patients' care. A related issue brief from the Center for Health Care Strategies, Core Considerations for Implementing Medicaid Accountable Care Organizations, reports on lessons from a learning collaborative of seven state Medicaid agencies that launched ACOs. The collaborative was supported by The Commonwealth Fund and the Massachusetts Medicaid Policy Institute.
