Ian Clarke of Austin, Texas, has been building things for as long as he can remember. He got his first computer when he was eight years old and learned to program based on a two-page list of commands that came with it. Clarke has not slowed down since: over the past 15 years, he’s founded five different tech start-ups.

Clarke credits his success in part to a piece of legislation that has little to do with technology: the Affordable Care Act (ACA). A new Commonwealth Fund feature article looks at how the ACA helped two Americans pursue their dream careers. It also considers the potential impact of uncertain government support for the ACA marketplaces where entrepreneurs like Clarke and others who don’t have access to employer-sponsored insurance buy their coverage. Already some marketplace insurers have increased their 2018 premiums or dropped out of the market altogether.
