Americans Can’t Afford to Get Sick — and Limited Health Plans Could Make Things Worse

The federal government announced new rules allowing insurers in some states to sell limited health insurance plans that offer bare-bones coverage. While cheap, these plans cover very little and can leave consumers with huge unexpected medical bills.

"This moves us backward in a health care system that already puts people who get sick, especially those who get very sick, on shaky ground," writes Commonwealth Fund President David Blumenthal, M.D., in a new column for The Hill.

“As a nation that spends more than 18 percent of its GDP on health care, the United States can meet the needs of our sick without bankrupting them,” Blumenthal says. He suggests steps to bolster the quality of health insurance coverage, make out-of-pocket costs more affordable, and bring drug prices down to reasonable levels.
