The Commonwealth Fund's Assuring Better Child Health and Development (ABCD) initiative helps pediatricians in several states integrate standardized development screen in well-child care. In North Carolina, pediatricians partnered with the Medicaid program and other public and private agencies to develop a successful model for such screening. Within two years, more than 100 primary care practices in 10 counties had adopted the model; screening rates jumped from 15 to 85 percent and referrals more than doubled. In July 2004, the state Medicaid agency changed policy to help expand the model statewide.

To help more clinicians integrate developmental and behavioral screening instruments into their practices, the Fund is supporting the North Carolina ABCD team to provide technical assistance to multi-disciplinary teams in five different states. Experts Marian Earls, M.D., and Sherry Hay, who developed the North Carolina ABCD model, will be available to these states to help them to:

Build a system to successfully integrate developmental and behavioral screening into primary care practice. This training will help practices redesign their office systems and link to key community partners in the delivery of developmental services.
Build an advisory group of key leaders who will help establish the support and policies to eliminate barriers and enable this system to become standard practice for the state.

For more information and to download an application for this technical assistance, visit our Web site.
