Celebrating Commonwealth Fund Fellowships in Minority Health
Since 1996, the Commonwealth Fund has offered a yearlong fellowship to physicians committed to transforming health care delivery systems for vulnerable populations, including people of color and economically disadvantaged groups. As part of our centennial celebration, the Commonwealth Fund interviewed two alumni about the impact their fellowship experience has had on their careers: 2000–01 fellow Seiji Hayashi, M.D., M.P.H., director of medicine at the Human Diagnosis Project, and 2010–11 fellow Kamillah Wood, M.D., M.P.H., senior vice president of health and housing at Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future.
Hayashi, who has served as a family physician in a Washington, D.C., health center, has studied community-oriented primary care initiatives and how to improve quality of care for Medicaid beneficiaries. He has also been part of the $5 billion federal community health center program. Wood, a pediatrician, has also followed a fascinating career path spanning clinical medicine, transportation, housing, and health policy.
Today, the Commonwealth Fund offers two fellowships: the Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Minority Health Policy at Harvard University and the Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Minority Health Leadership at Yale University, launched this summer.
