David Blumenthal in WSJ: Food Can Be a Weapon in the Battle Against Health Care Costs
More and more evidence shows that helping patients meet their nutritional needs can reduce health care spending.
In a new post on the Wall Street Journal’s Experts blog (subscription required), Commonwealth Fund President David Blumenthal, M.D., points to health plans that have found significant savings when they provide their chronically ill enrollees with medically tailored meals. He also notes how the bipartisan Chronic Care Act has made it possible for Medicare programs to invest in food services.
“As the compelling evidence accumulates, doctors, insurers and government health advocates should find more ways to test the benefits of adequate food,” Blumenthal writes.
