The Dose, Episode Four: What Are All These Medical Bills For?
In the U.S., we receive a medical bill every time we see a doctor or visit a hospital. We may find ourselves perplexed by the dollar amounts in the bills, but still, we expect to see them. This isn't true in other parts of the world.
In this episode of The Dose, host Shanoor Seervai talks with Marthe Haverkamp, a medical doctor and former health policy adviser to the Dutch government. Marthe is from the Netherlands, where by law, everyone must have health insurance and then gets access to the same affordable care.
Shortly after she came to the U.S. with her family, Marthe was astonished to find herself facing medical bills running into thousands of dollars. Even as a health care expert, she struggled to get answers about what care would cost and how much would be covered by insurance.
