Eric Schneider, M.D., to Join the Commonwealth Fund as Senior Vice President for Policy and Research

<p>Eric C. Schneider, M.D., Senior Principal Researcher and Distinguished Chair in Health Care Quality at RAND, and director of its Boston office, will join The Commonwealth Fund as Senior Vice President for Policy and Research on February 2, 2015. He will be based at the foundation’s New York City headquarters.</p><p>Schneider will serve as a member of the Commonwealth Fund’s Executive Management Team, guiding the Fund’s policy research strategy, evaluating the research designs used in Fund projects and initiatives, advising on methods, including survey development and analysis, evaluating completed projects, and providing scientific review of Fund publications.</p>
<p>As a health services researcher and physician, Schneider will bring to bear his wide range of experience in health policy, quality measurement and improvement, delivery system innovation, clinical sciences, health insurance, and access to care for vulnerable populations. “We are extremely fortunate to be able to welcome Eric Schneider to The Commonwealth Fund in this important role,” said Donald Moulds, Executive Vice President for Programs. “His expertise in the use of data and rigorous analytic methods to improve health care quality will be vital to leading initiatives furthering the Fund’s mission of moving the U.S. to a high performance health system, particularly for those with the greatest needs.”</p>
<p>Schneider currently teaches quality improvement in health care at the Harvard School of Public Health and practices primary care internal medicine at Brigham Internal Medicine Associates and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. His recent research has addressed health care quality, with a focus on the specification, use, and impact of performance measurement and reporting. A former editor-in-chief of the <em>International Journal for Quality in Health Care</em>, he has published widely on the development and evaluation of performance measures, the uses of performance data to evaluate racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in health care, and the use of organizational innovations and health information technology to improve quality.</p>
<p>Schneider serves on the editorial board of the National Quality Measures Clearinghouse and National Guidelines Clearinghouse, both sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. A fellow of the American College of Physicians, he is also co-chair of the Committee for Performance Measurement of the National Committee for Quality Assurance, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and past methodologist on the Executive Committee of the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement of the American Medical Association.</p>
<p>Schneider earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Columbia University, a master’s in science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco.</p>
