The news that UnitedHealth Group might leave the Affordable Care Act’s insurance marketplaces has prompted concern about whether the health law is in trouble. In a new blog post, The Commonwealth Fund’s David Blumenthal and Sara Collins say that while the impact of UnitedHealth Group’s decision would be small, the announcement does raise the question of whether the marketplaces are enrolling enough people to ensure a well-balanced risk pool of healthy people and those with health problems.

Blumenthal and Collins find no evidence of instability in the marketplaces, however. They also highlight pending developments and opportunities that should strengthen them. Still, Blumenthal and Collins warn that “one of the biggest threats to the stability of the individual insurance markets—and indeed, to the financial health of all Americans—is the continuing erosion of the value of private insurance generally.”
