King v. Burwell: What a Subsidy Shutdown Could Mean for States

<p>How would a Supreme Court ruling for the plaintiff in <em>King v. Burwell</em> affect states? In the final post of a Commonwealth Fund Blog series, Joel Ario, Michael Kolber, and Deborah Bachrach of Manatt Health Solutions say that governors and legislatures will need to decide whether to establish a state marketplace and restore the subsidies.</p><p>If not, many health care providers in the affected states would go unpaid for their services, and premiums for individual insurance policies would skyrocket, forcing consumers to drop their coverage.</p>
