To Promote High-Value Care, Look Beyond Financial Rewards Alone

Audet, M.D., and Dominique Hall discuss a new Commonwealth Fund initiative, “Incentives 2.0: A Synergistic Approach to Provider Incentives,” that is exploring complementary strategies to improve decision-making and promote higher value in health care. The initiative is examining the range of factors that influence providers’ choices, including not just financial rewards and penalties, but also, intrinsic motivation and professionalism, organizational influences, and policy.</p>
