<p>In a guest commentary for the 20th anniversary issue of the <em>American Journal of Managed Care</em>, The Commonwealth Fund’s David Blumenthal, M.D., and David Squires say it’s “time to retool the term managed care for the 21st century.”</p><p>The authors examine which aspects of health care “can and should be managed for the benefit of patients,” and how we might begin to address “the seeming—but not inherent—contradiction between care management and patient engagement and empowerment.”</p>
