Mary Giliberti, J.D., is chief public policy officer for Mental Health America, the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting the overall mental health of all Americans. She focuses on federal policy to promote prevention, early intervention, and recovery. Giliberti is the author of numerous blog posts and publications on policy solutions for improving access to mental health and substance use care and is a member of the Technical Expert Panel for the Center of Excellence on Social Media and Mental Health. She previously served for five years as the chief executive officer of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. During that time, she served as a nonfederal member of the Interdepartmental Serious Mental Illness Coordinating Committee. Giliberti also was a section chief in the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where she worked on interagency collaborations, health reform, and civil rights enforcement and regulations. During her more than 20 years in the mental health field, she also served as disability counsel for the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and as a senior attorney at the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law. Giliberti earned a B.A. from Harvard College and a J.D. from Yale Law School, and clerked for Judge Phyllis Kravitch on the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
