Strategies for Promoting Uptake of Personal Health Records

Online personal health records—also known as patient portals—give patients access to their medical information, allow them to communicate with their providers, facilitate tasks such as prescription refills and appointment scheduling, and provide access to educational tools. For their new study in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (Oct. 2014), 2012–13 Harkness Fellow Susan Wells and colleagues interviewed U.S. health care organizations that have successfully implemented personal health records to understand how they promoted their use among both providers and patients, focusing particularly on approaches relevant to patients with chronic conditions.
