National Institute for Quality and Transparency in Health Care Introduced

In January, the German federal government established the National Institute for Quality and Transparency in Health Care. Its mission is to advance the measurement of quality in health care and to make quality of care transparent for all stakeholders, including patients. The measures developed by the institute may serve as basis for quality improvement, informed decision-making for patients, public ranking lists of health care providers, and movement toward quality-oriented reimbursement for providers.
