In March, NHS England Chief Executive Simon Stevens formally announced that NHS was backing 10 new “healthy” towns. What started as an affordable housing plan has become an opportunity to improve the health and well-being of residents in the new neighborhoods. Some characteristics of the towns—comprising 76,000 homes and 170,000 residents—include easier access to public transportation, safer bicycling and pedestrian networks, and residences that encourage older people to live independently.
