While 97 percent of U.S. hospitals and 74 percent of U.S. physicians have implemented interoperable electronic health records, less than a third of behavioral health providers have done so. In the latest issue of Health Affairs, Commonwealth Fund–supported researchers led by Piper Ranallo of the National Mental Health Informatics Workgroup and Columbia University’s Harold Alan Pincus, M.D., review gaps and challenges in health information technology in the behavioral health field and suggest some remedies.
