Formation of National Plan to Raise Health Literacy in Germany

A group of stakeholders, including the German Federal Ministry of Health, health insurance funds, and two universities, began work on a national action plan to raise health literacy after a recent study found that over 50 percent of Germans had limited health literacy. Specific recommendations on how to foster health literacy, especially among the elderly, those of lower socioeconomic status, and immigrants, will be presented in the “National Action Plan for Health Competence” due out next year.
