In response to the rising number of opioid overdoses, Health Canada has approved the opening of three opioid consumption sites in Montreal. Similar programs—which have on-site staff to provide sterile equipment, basic health care, and treatment referrals—have achieved positive results in other communities across Canada. Supervised consumption has resulted in a decline in overdose deaths, emergency department use, and hospital admissions because of opioid use.
