The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health, an Aboriginal-controlled and managed health service located in South East Queensland, may serve as a model of care for other parts of the country. Through its innovative programs, the institute has seen life expectancy gains of nearly a full year over just the past five years, for the Indigenous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples it serves. The network includes 19 clinics that are one-stop shops, providing traditional health care, as well as dental care, gyms, and trainers. The success seen to date is attributed to the care model’s strong focus on prevention and empowering communities to better manage their own health.
