British Columbia has launched an HIV/AIDS campaign that aims to test everyone in the province who has ever been sexually active in order to find the estimated 1 percent of people who are unaware they are HIV-positive and are not taking advantage of a province-wide treatment program. Residents will be screened with an HIV antibody test that produces results in about 30 seconds from a drop of blood taken from a person's fingertip. Julio Montaner, director of British Columbia's Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, said that the estimated 3,500 people in the province who are HIV-positive but don't know it fuel the majority of new infections in the province. To encourage public participation, health authorities will launch a major advertising and social media campaign.
