Ron Paterson, L.L.B., a 1998–99 Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice, served as New Zealand's health and disability commissioner for 10 years. Drawing on his conversations with both physicians and patients, Paterson's new book, The Good Doctor: What Patients Want, outlines what makes "a good doctor" and suggests ways to improve care by keeping patients better informed, measuring physicians’ competence, and ensuring medical watchdogs protect the public.
