In a new article published by Medscape, Commonwealth Fund researchers focus on the role of the Affordable Care Act in increasing use of preventive health services. By 2016, 6.2 million more nonelderly adults will be up-to-date on preventive services as a result of the law's health coverage expansions, the authors estimate. Other provisions will strengthen the nation's primary care infrastructure, most notably by promoting the development of "medical homes" that provide patients with enhanced access and care coordination services. The authors estimate that as many as an additional 3.6 million adults would be current on their preventive services if medical homes were to become widespread.
