New Order to Prevent Medication Errors in Hospital

French Health Minister Xavier Bertrand and Secretary of State for Health Nora Berra recently signed an order to improve prevention of medication errors among hospital patients. The order requires health care organizations to study the risks associated with medication errors incurred by patients; formalize the strategy and responsibilities for medication errors within their facilities; plan improvement processes and communicate them to personnel; analyze medication errors and develop future actions for improvement; and establish training for professionals. The order also establishes a support system (including enhanced training, IT support, and provision of tools) to be administered through existing regional structures. Federal financial support will be provided to develop an analysis of medication errors, as well as electronic approaches to risk management. The order is consistent with the government strategy to promote continuous improvement in quality of care and safety by health care facilities. It was developed in consultation with health care organizations; scientific societies, hospital, health care professional, and patient associations; the French Observatory of Drugs, Medical Devices, and Therapeutic Innovation; and regional health agencies.
