Study: Need for Better Measures of Care Transitions—Not Just Readmission Rates

Relying on readmission rates for a single time period may not be the best way to assess the quality of hospital care, according to this Commonwealth Fund–supported study (Health Affairs, June 2013). Researchers found that readmission rates tend to fluctuate from quartile to quartile, and are not correlated with performance on other commonly used hospital quality indicators, including mortality rates, volume, teaching status, and provision of recommended care.
