Within the next two years, the NHS in England will publish performance data on its surgeons. While some have warned that this move may deter surgeons from taking on complex and high-risk procedures, others see the change as encouraging greater transparency in care and as an opportunity to expose variation and unacceptable practices in the NHS.
Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said in BMJ that he supported the publication of the data because "greater transparency and accountability will help drive up standards for patients."
