For successful implementation of developmental surveillance in the office setting, it is best to define and establish the office process, logistics, staff roles, record keeping, etc. before starting. This generally requires input from the administrative and nursing staff to be certain adequate planning has been done to keep flow smooth. It is also key to have referral processes and parent information materials established and readily available. Recommended steps prior to implementation are:
- Assess current protocols. These may be a good framework for starting, or they may need to be replaced by the new process. Often the new process is more efficient.
- Identify a "physician champion" to keep staff focused on the activity.
- Select a screening tool. This can be changed based on satisfaction after initial trial.
- Map the workflow. Clearly define and diagram the process for any and all staff who are involved in the procedures.
- Identify system supports. It is particularly helpful to identify and network with community partners who will take referrals and work with families.
