On September 23, 2013, more than 200 congressional and administration staff, journalists, and other Washington, D.C., policy stakeholders convened for a briefing to discuss lessons learned from participants in the Pioneer Accountable Care Organization (ACO) program and the progress of ACOs across the nation.

Elliott Fisher, M.D., of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice provided an overview of the progress and impact of ACOs nationwide. Greg Sheff, M.D., of Seton Healthcare Family in Austin, Texas discussed Seton’s decision to transition from the Pioneer ACO program to the Medicare Shared Savings program. Finally, Steve Safyer, M.D., of Montefiore Medical Center in New York City described some of Montefiore’s successes during the first year of the Pioneer ACO program. The briefing was comoderated by Ed Howard of the Alliance for Health Reform and The Commonwealth Fund’s Anne-Marie Audet, M.D.
