Stephen M. Shortell, Ph.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., is the Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management Emeritus and Dean Emeritus, School of Public Health, and Professor of Organization Behavior Emeritus, Haas School of Business, at the University of California, Berkeley. A leading health care scholar, Shortell is the recipient of many awards, including the distinguished Baxter-Allegiance Prize for his contributions to health services research. An elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, he is preparing to launch the third round of the National Survey of Provider Organizations. He is also conducting research on the evaluation of quality improvement initiatives and on the implementation of evidence-based medicine practices in physician organizations.
