Senior Researcher, Health Care Coverage and Access, The Commonwealth Fund

Munira Z. Gunja

Munira Z. Gunja, M.P.H., is the Commonwealth Fund’s senior researcher in the Health Care Coverage and Access program. Ms. Gunja joined the Commonwealth Fund from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE), Division of Health Care Access and Coverage. As a social science analyst since April 2013, Ms. Gunja has been a key data analyst on ASPE’s tracking and analysis of the effects of the Affordable Care Act, including marketplace enrollment data, marketplace premiums, and the Gallup survey data. Most recently she was the lead analyst on the ASPE fact sheet on the decline in uninsured since 2010 that generated the now widely cited estimate of 16.4 million. Ms. Gunja also worked with Benjamin Sommers, M.D., of the Harvard School of Public Health and colleagues on an analysis of Gallup data published last summer in the New England Journal of Medicine. She was recently awarded the Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service for tracking enrollment in the marketplaces and reporting on the findings through monthly enrollment reports, charts, and graphics.

Before joining ASPE, Ms. Gunja worked for the National Cancer Institute where she conducted data analysis for numerous studies featured in scientific journals. She graduated from Tulane University with a B.S. in Public Health and International Development and an M.P.H. in Epidemiology.
